Last Shot timeline

In the lead-up to Solo: A Star Wars Story, Del Rey released Last Shot, a novel that focuses on the relationship between Han and Lando. While it’s gotten praise for its portrayal of those characters and the important step in representation with the non-binary main character Taka Jamoreesa, one element I’ve seen people be less appreciative of is the book’s timeline. Jumping back and forth between the main story and a series of flashbacks set throughout history, it got confusing for a lot of people. In this post, I will attempt to make sense of it.

The timeline according to the book:

20 years ago: Fyzen Gor gets kidnapped from medical school and ends up in a canyon alone with droids and spare organic parts.
18 years ago: Fyzen Gor’s droid army gets smashed by Cli Pastayra of the Wandering Star and Fyzen is forced into servitude.
15 years ago: Lando and L3 in the Falcon investigate the Phylanx Redux Transmitter and run into Fyzen and his overpowered jetpack.
12 years ago: L3 uploads a virus to the Phylanx Redux Transmitter that causes it to doubt its master.
10 years ago: The Phylanx Redux Transmitter is auctioned off on Cantonica. A shoot-out occurs and Fyzen takes the opportunity to kill his Wandering Star masters. Sana Starros runs off with the Transmitter.
10 years ago: Sana Starros recruits Han Solo, Chewbacca and their Falcon to keep people off her back who want to take the Phylanx Redux Transmitter. Han ejects it from the Falcon when things get too hot.
Present day: Fyzen Gor forces Han and Lando to find him the Phylanx Redux Transmitter, but the two smugglers prevent him from destroying all organic life in the galaxy with it.

Dissecting the timeline

A couple of things are immediately iffy. How can Fyzen Gor be out in the galaxy with the Transmitter for Lando and L3 to run into? Did he get time off from indentured servitude? One way for this to make sense is if Fyzen had escaped the Wandering Star, but they came after him, took him back in, and auctioned off the Transmitter when they realized its potency. But it’s weird to omit that from the book.
Edit: DJ Older himself was kind enough to point out on Twitter that Fyzen was relatively free to come and go as he pleased because Cli didn’t think of him as a threat. I’m not fully on board with the character motivations there, but it works timeline-wise.
Then, there’s L3-37 taking three years to produce a virus and the first of her L3 squad and getting them both to the Transmitter, before it’s later auctioned off.

The main spanner in the works though? Solo. It seems the timeline of the movie changed after the book was completed because it completely throws off the book. Solo takes place 17 years before Last Shot’s main story. Which means both Lando’s flashback chapters and L3’s placing of the virus have to be moved before then. And considering Han is still reeling from a bad breakup in his flashback chapters – not to mention his age of “late early twenties”, it’s likely that these chapters are meant to be closer to Solo, too.

The new timeline

20+ years ago: Fyzen Gor gets kidnapped from medical school and ends up in a canyon alone with droids and spare organic parts.
18+ years ago: Fyzen Gor’s droid army gets smashed by Cli Pastayra of the Wandering Star and Fyzen is forced into servitude.
18-17 years ago: Lando and L3 in the Falcon investigate the Phylanx Redux Transmitter and run into Fyzen and his overpowered jetpack.
17 years ago: L3 uploads a virus to the Phylanx Redux Transmitter that causes it to doubt its master.
17 years ago: Lando loses the Millennium Falcon to Han.
17-15 years ago: The Phylanx Redux Transmitter is auctioned off on Cantonica. A shoot-out occurs and Fyzen takes the opportunity to kill his Wandering Star masters. Sana Starros runs off with the Transmitter.
17-15 years ago: Sana Starros recruits Han Solo, Chewbacca and their Falcon to keep people off her back who want to take the Phylanx Redux Transmitter. Han ejects it from the Falcon when things get too hot.
Present day: Fyzen Gor forces Han and Lando to find him the Phylanx Redux Transmitter, but the two smugglers prevent him from destroying all organic life in the galaxy with it.

This is my best bet on fixing Last Shot’s timeline. If anyone has any better ideas, I’d love to hear them!
